Description

  • Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr (1935–1980) was a prominent Iraqi Shia scholar, jurist, philosopher, and political thinker.

  • He made significant contributions to Islamic economics and the foundation of modern Islamic finance.

Purpose and Central Thesis

  • The book argues for a banking system that is free from riba (interest/usury), which al-Sadr views as fundamentally incompatible with Islamic principles.

  • Al-Sadr envisions an Islamic economic model grounded in justice, shared risk, and profit-and-loss participation rather than fixed interest.

  • He strongly emphasizes profit-sharing (for example via mudaraba) rather than guaranteed interest to achieve a fairer and more equitable financial system.

Key Themes and Arguments

  1. Critique of Conventional Economic Systems

    • He critically analyzes both capitalism and socialism from an Islamic perspective.

    • For capitalism, he rejects the unlimited private accumulation of wealth without moral obligations; for socialism, he challenges the idea of total state ownership.

  2. Principles of an Islamic Economic System

    • Al-Sadr outlines Islamic economics’ foundational principles: justice, brotherhood, equal opportunity, and social security.

    • He argues property (both private and public) comes from God, and the rights and responsibilities of ownership are defined within an Islamic framework.

  3. Banking Without Interest

    • The core of the book is developing a banking system that avoids riba by relying on Islamic contracts and institutions that align with Sharia.

    • He proposes mechanisms where banks and depositors share risk and profit, rather than banks guaranteeing profit through interest.

  4. Socio-Economic Justice

    • Al-Sadr emphasizes that economic activity should serve societal welfare, not just individual profit

    • The system should reduce inequality, offer social security, and ensure fair distribution of wealth in line with Islamic values.

Significance and Influence

  • His work laid intellectual groundwork for modern Islamic finance. Islamic finance as we know it (with profit-sharing, non-interest banks) draws heavily from his ideas.

  • Many contemporary Islamic banking models—especially those advocating non-usury profit/loss sharing models—are inspired by al-Sadr’s vision

Criticism / Challenges

  • Some argue that al-Sadr’s insistence on risk-sharing and profit-sharing is difficult to implement in large-scale, modern banking due to regulatory, operational, and risk-management challenges.

  • His model is more idealistic and requires strong ethical governance, which may be hard to maintain in profit-driven financial institutions.
