Hazrat Zainab bint Ali (sa) was the noble granddaughter of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the daughter of Imam Ali (as) and Hazrat Fatima Zahra (sa). She was born in Medina in 5 AH, in a home blessed with knowledge, piety, and divine light. From childhood, she grew under the guidance of her grandfather Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), her mother Fatima (sa), and her father Imam Ali (as), gaining exceptional character, wisdom, and spiritual strength.
Early Life and Qualities
From an early age, Hazrat Zainab (sa) displayed remarkable patience, intelligence, and compassion. She resembled her mother in modesty and her father in eloquence and courage. Her name “Zainab” means “The adornment of her father”, reflecting her closeness to Imam Ali (as).
She married Abdullah ibn Ja’far, known for his generosity and noble character. Together they had children, including Aun and Muhammad, who later sacrificed their lives in Karbala.
Role in Karbala
The most defining moment of Hazrat Zainab’s (sa) life was her role in the tragedy of Karbala (61 AH). After Imam Hussain (as) and his companions were martyred, it was Hazrat Zainab (sa) who became the protector, leader, and voice of the surviving members of the Ahlulbayt.
She faced unimaginable hardships with unwavering faith:

Her famous sermon in Damascus shook the foundations of Yazid’s rule. With dignity and boldness, she declared the greatness of Imam Hussain (as) and condemned oppression. That moment earned her the title:
“Zainab al-Kubra – The Great Zainab”
and
“Sharikat al-Hussain – The Partner of Hussain”
because she completed the mission of Karbala through her words and endurance.
Later Life and Passing
After her release from imprisonment, Hazrat Zainab (sa) returned to Medina. Her health was affected by the suffering she endured. She passed away either in Medina, Damascus, or Cairo (different historical narrations exist), but her legacy remains eternal.
